Science & Engineering Indicators 2010

The latest NSF report on Science and Engineering Indicators 2010 has been released (I'm actually over a month late in blogging on it, but considering that the report only comes out every two years, I figure that's not too bad). I've made previous entries for the 2004, 2006, and 2008 versions of the report. There really isn't anything new this time. The long term trends are relatively constant, and the overall literacy is still depressingly low.

First, here's the table that compares the scientific literacy of several countries. This table was taken from the section, Chapter 7. Science and Technology: Public Attitudes and Understanding. The numbers in the table are the percentage of people that responded correctly, while the correct answer is listed in parentheses after the question.

U.S. Scientific Literacy History

Just look at those results - around a quarter of Americans think that the Sun goes around the Earth, half don't realize that electrons are smaller than atoms, and half don't know that it takes a year for the Earth to go around the Sun! Keep that in mind whenever you hear people citing public opinion polls on the validity of concepts like global warming or evolution.

It's always a bit depressing to see those numbers. It's hard to believe that the people of our nation are so ignorant. If there's one lesson to take away from these results, it's that we need to vastly improve our education system.

Update 2010-02-26: I updated the graph to add a title and labels to the axes. Also, the night after I wrote this entry, I went home and asked my 10 year old daughter the questions from the survey. She managed to get 9 out of 10 correct.

I find it funny how you ignore the fact that the US actually did very well in comparison to other parts of the globe (despite many claims that America is full of morons).

That's a good point. I had mentioned it in another blog entry (discussing problems with the U.S. education system - "I'm not sure what a good solution is, or if there are any other countries with good models to emulate. When you look at reports like the NSF's Science and Engineering Indicators, people are ignorant all over the world."), but I didn't discuss it specifically in this entry, or any of my previous entries on the Science and Engineering Indicators. I thought that simply including the table was enough to make the point. There are many tables I could have pulled from the NSF report, and I pulled the comparison to other countries specifically because I thought it was interesting, but maybe I should have written something about it.

Comparing the U.S. to other countries certainly doesn't refute the claim that "America is full of morons" (half of Americans don't know how long it takes for the Earth to go around the Sun, for crying out loud). It just means that other countries have just as many morons as we do. It really is pretty depressing. It's enough to disillusion you regarding democracy, when you realize that all these people get equal votes. (Not that I'd suggest any type of qualification tests for voting - we all know how 'literacy' tests were used prior to the Voting Rights Act. And I certainly don't think we've found any forms of government better than democracy or representative democracy. The only solution is better education, but that's a long road.)

So, you raise a good point in that the U.S. is comparable to other countries in scientific literacy, but that's only because the scientific literacy is horrible everywhere.

It's the father's *chromosome* that (mostly) determines the sex.

I don't claim to be an expert in genetics, but I thought it was the SRY gene that was primarily responsible for sex determination in humans and other therian mammals. According to that Wikipedia article, it is usually located on the Y chromosome, but not always. If an individual has two X chromosomes, but at least one of the two contains the SRY gene, the individual will develop into a male (albeit infertile). If an individual has both an X and Y chromosome, but lacks the SRY gene, the individual will develop into a female.
